The Integratron

After a short break we continue with our california desert trip.

Today is alien day, but more on that later.

“Have you ever heard about the Integratron?” our friend asks at breakfast, “You need to go there. This place is magical.”

According to the website ( the place is an “acoustically perfect tabernacle and energy machine sited on a powerful geomagnetic vortex in the magical Mojave Desert.” A quote from a local newspaper elaborates: “Whether you're interested in space aliens, Sound Baths, or local history of the strange kind, the Integratron is a can't-miss Morongo Basin landmark."

Colorful,  surprising and eventful. The only city in the world which is situated on two continents has so much more to offer than chai tea, baklava and the bosporos.

Berlin-based graphic designer Ufuk Inci proves it with his amble trough the perfect places to get away and get together in his hometown Istanbul.

Spring Break at the Ace Hotel

It started so well with Radiohead and Johnny Cash. For the first time, I'm not annoyed by music at the pool. The kids and I have gone swimming early in the morning while daddy is at work in LA making some money to feed the family. Actually, it’s super-nice here at the Ace Hotel & Swim Club. The service is not too cool for school like we’d heard – in fact, everybody is friendly and really easy-going.

Palm Canyon

In the morning we’re off to Palm Canyon, a “must”, as a mom told me at La Quinta. “The palm-tree arrangements look like they were built for Disneyland.” Part of the Agua Caliente Indian Reservation, Palm Canyon is quite impressive, perfect for hiking and other outdoor activities.

A very sad lake

Salton Sea
Before we arrive to our next hotel we make a short trip to the Salton Sea. As we get out of the car, we are overwhelmed by the stink of dead crabs and algae. It is deathly silent, except for the lonesome howl of passing freight trains, a sound I had previously only known from movies.

Running at La Quinta Resort Palms Springs

Today I completed the 7-mile trail in 1 hour, 38 minutes. I had to stop at every water dispenser to cool myself down, although it's not too hot. It’s actually quite comfortable, about 28-30°C in the afternoon. When we were here last time in the summer the average temperature was about 40° and it didn’t cool down by night. Our savior was the water sprinklers placed on the balconies to cool down the air with a fine mist in the evening – sexy indeed.

Palms Springs: La Quinta Resort

Best wishes from La Quinta Resort. We are very happy here. The weather is great, and the sun is burning. The food is Mexican and delicious. The margaritas are organic and also fantastic. Last night I had two of them, big ones with straws, and slept very well afterwards.

Los Angeles, could I live here?

We are at the Urth Caffé (8565 Melrose Avenue, West Hollywood, CA; 310-659-0628), which is an organic coffee company offering a wide selection of healthy meals and fresh baked desserts. It is quite an international, European place – you hear a lot of different languages. I look at the surrounding streets and wonder why LA doesn’t feel quite as American as I was expecting it to.
Maybe it’s because I’ve been here recently and the stranger no longer seems so strange to me. Or is it because of the cars, which are exactly the same cars we drive at home…?

There are a lot of BMWs, Mercedes, Volkswagens, Toyotas and Hondas as far as I can see – but not a lot of American brands. Sorry for being in the comparison mode, but comparing helps me to categorize and describe my environment. And no matter where I go, I ask myself: "Could I live here?"

Quote of the week

“If you want to build a ship, don't drum up people together to collect wood and don't assign them tasks and work, but rather teach them to long for the endless immensity of the sea”
