There’s always something going on here in this small, ever-changing space – on a recent visit I saw a group show dedicated to both the Beatles and Christmas. It was both playful and disconcerting. But in a good way. There’s a cat that lives there and, in Berlin tradition, maybe a few people in the back as well.

Pension Berlin

Blurring a whole lot of lines, the newly opened Pension Berlin is sort of a pension and sort of an art gallery, and, best of all, its floors are tiled with coins. Real coins. There’s an art studio to side, open to the public, and the basement is rumored to have a living room/cinema. But it might just have a really big TV. There are only two rooms in the Pension, both looking like very cozy art projects.

The banks of the Kreuzberg canal 

One of the best picnic spots in Berlin. If the weather is good, there’s no better place to spend an evening with friends, drinking and watching the tourist boats sleepily pull by. There’s always an Indian guy walking around selling poppadoms, and luckily there aren’t too many drum circles or Czechs singing Bob Marley weepers. Besides lounging on the grass, if you’re brave, you can explore the infamous post-apocalptic party boat, which has been the scene of many impromptu parties.
